Nook House
Schematic Design, 2018
Desert Hot Springs, California
Nook House is a weekend house for one person, located in the arid landscape of Desert Hot Springs. The house consists of a single extruded volume that is punctured by a series of exterior voids. These simple negative forms are carefully composed to produce continuities and discontinuities within the single volume of the house. The voids push into the extruded volume, forming small landscaped courtyards that bring light into the interior. The voids are glazed with curved glass and incorporate a series of sliding glass doors that open to the outside. The mostly solid building envelope provides shade and protection from the sometimes harsh climatic extremes. The roof and facade is clad with a simple pattern of concrete shingles that vary across the length of the house.
